GET TO KNOW JOHN

John Fitzgerald is the most decorated player in UCO’s rich football history as an offensive lineman who paved the way for some powerful running games in the late 1990s and was also an indoor and outdoor track standout for the Bronchos in the shot put and discus.

John was a three-time All-Lone Star Conference North Division selection in 1998, ‘99 and ‘00 earning first-team All-America honors in 1998.  He repeated as an All-American in 1999 and, again earned first-team All-Amerca honors in 2000.  He is the only 3x All-American at UCO since the Bronchos joined the NCAA.  He helped lead UCO to an undefeated regular season and the No. 1 ranking in NCAA Division II in 1998, with the Bronchos winning their only overall LSC titles in 1998 and ‘99.  John led the way for TWO 1,000 yard rushers during the 1998 season.

Fitzgerald was named to the Oklahoman All-Century Team (1900-99) for State College Football in addition to making the UCO All-Century Team and the Lone Star Conference All-75th Anniversary Team, alongside many College Football Hall of Famers.  He was inducted into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.  The football team has presented the John Fitzgerald Offensive Lineman of the Year Award to the top Offensive Lineman annually since 2014.  John first appeared on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot with the 2015 class.  John was inducted into the Putnam City District Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022.

In track, he was an indoor All-American in the shot put and an outdoor national qualifier in the discus while placing in those two events and the hammer in the 1998 and ‘99 LSC Championships.

John graduated from UCO with a Bachelors of Business Management in 2000 and has worked in sales since that time.  He has served as the color analyst for UCO football's award winning radio broadcasts for 11 seasons.

HOW DOES JOHN STACK UP?

John appears on the divisional section of the College Football Hall of Fame ballot.  Of all of the divisional players listed on the 2023 ballot, there are only FIVE that earned All-America honors 3 times, with Fitzgerald being one of those five.  The University of Central Oklahoma has a rich 100+ year history of college football.  That includes 2 National Championships.  They have zero College Football Hall of Fame inductees.  This needs to change.

HOW CAN YOU VOTE?

All members of the National Football Foundation are eligible to vote.  If you are already a member, you can vote for John when the annual ballot comes out in early June.  If you are not yet a member, but wish to vote for the College Football Hall of Fame, you can join at https://footballfoundation.secure.force.com/membership

Divisional players, like John, do not compete with the FBS players for spots in the Hall of Fame.  Being a member of the NFF allows you to vote for those players, and FBS and Divisional coaches, as well!
